The Book Eaters

On the Yorkshire Moors, a hidden community lives by consuming books and absorbing their contents. Devon’s brothers are fed adventures, while the women receive stories chosen to teach caution and obedience. The restrictions of that upbringing become impossible to accept when Devon’s son develops a different appetite: he needs human minds. Protecting him forces her beyond the comforting narratives her family has allowed her to know. The love that drives her resistance also brings terrible consequences for others. This dark fantasy follows a mother confronting a society built to control her, while asking how far devotion can take someone—and what remains of the stories about goodness that once explained her world.
