In Kyrkarta, magic became an expensive corporate commodity after an earthquake and a deadly plague transformed the city. Diz and her friends make a living siphoning it illegally, relying on one another’s technical and magical skills. They intend their next job to be the last. Instead, an unfamiliar strain of magic turns the theft into a disaster and exposes a conspiracy connected to the catastrophe that reshaped their world. Escaping with their lives now means understanding what powerful people want concealed. The crew’s closeness makes the risks personal, with Diz’s feelings for nonbinary teammate Remi adding another layer of uncertainty. This young adult heist fantasy follows a queer found family whose attempt to leave crime behind uncovers a much larger danger.
