Claire’s love for the television show Demon Heart has found an outlet in popular fanfiction about a romance between its male leads. Meeting actor Forest at a convention should be a dream, but his dismissive response to her question becomes a viral public-relations problem. The producers invite Claire onto the publicity tour, putting a frustrated fan and a defensive actor in repeated contact. While they argue about representation and who gets to define a character, Claire also keeps encountering Tess, a fan artist she would like to know better. Told through Claire and Forest’s perspectives, this young adult novel explores fandom, ambition and the uncertainty of understanding one’s own desires while demanding to see them represented.
