Like Other Girls

After a fight gets Mara removed from the basketball team, she needs another way to prove she can work with others. Football seems promising: she loves the game, joins her brother and best friend on the field, and discovers she has talent. Her decision inspires other girls to try out, including her crush, Valentina, and Carly, the girl involved in the original fight. Suddenly Mara is being treated as a political statement rather than simply a player. The team also challenges her own assumptions about girls and femininity. Britta Lundin’s YA novel follows a butch lesbian teenager navigating sport, attraction and the uncomfortable process of reconsidering what she believes.
