Salt Fish Girl
2002
The story
Nu Wa moves through forms and identities in nineteenth-century China, while in a future Pacific Northwest, a girl named Miranda lives within the walls of Serendipity. Their stories echo across time through bodily changes, strange memories and the lingering presence of the past. Miranda's world is governed by corporate interests that extend into work, cities and the creation of life itself. Her unusual connection to what came before makes the boundaries of that world increasingly unstable. Drawing on Chinese mythology and speculative fiction, this novel explores gender, desire and the costs of systems that treat living beings as commodities. Its linked narratives ask what forms resistance and connection might take under such conditions.
