BETWEEN THE COVERS
The story
Yetu carries a history that the rest of her people cannot bear to remember. They are an underwater community descended from pregnant African women thrown from slave ships, and their collective past is entrusted to a single historian. For Yetu, holding those memories means enduring pain that threatens to overwhelm her own identity. When she escapes to the surface, she encounters a world beyond the role that has defined her. Leaving brings relief, but it also raises questions about what her community needs and whether survival must demand one person's suffering. This speculative novella explores memory, belonging and the possibility of finding a different way to carry an inherited past.
