The Grief Keeper
2019
The story
Marisol and her younger sister flee El Salvador after violence makes remaining at home impossible. Reaching the United States does not bring the safety they imagined: their asylum claim appears unlikely to succeed. Desperate to protect her sister, Marisol agrees to participate in an experimental arrangement that transfers another person’s grief into her body. The promise of remaining in the country comes with physical and emotional risks she cannot fully anticipate. As a new possibility of love enters her life, the boundaries between her own pain and someone else’s become increasingly difficult to hold. This speculative story connects queer desire, displacement and mourning with questions about whose suffering is treated as expendable.
