Miss Timmins’ School for Girls
2011
The story
In 1974, Charulata Apte arrives at a girls’ boarding school in Panchgani to teach Shakespeare and begin a life beyond her sheltered upbringing. The school’s formal routines exist alongside a much less orderly world of music, friendships and desires she has barely allowed herself to imagine. Her attraction to fellow teacher Moira Prince becomes part of that awakening, drawing her away from the expectations of her family. Then a death transforms the school into a place of suspicion. Charu finds herself implicated, and the students begin investigating the adults whose authority once seemed unquestionable. Against the backdrop of a changing India, her search for independence becomes entangled with secrets, judgment and a mystery that threatens the future she has only just begun to claim.
