Fortune Favors the Dead

Willowjean Parker's talent for throwing knives unexpectedly earns her an apprenticeship with Lillian Pentecost, a private detective whose multiple sclerosis has made an assistant essential. Three years later, Will is helping investigate a wealthy widow's death after a Halloween party. The locked-room murder, committed with a crystal ball, has invited rumors of supernatural revenge, but the detectives need a more tangible explanation. Messages from the dead and a persuasive spiritualist complicate the case. So does Will's attraction to Becca Collins, the victim's daughter. As their relationship moves beyond professional boundaries, Will risks losing the distance she needs to recognize the danger gathering around her and the family she is investigating.
