Sancia Grado survives by stealing in Tevanne, a city where powerful merchant houses control the magical techniques that shape everyday life. A commission to take a mysterious object seems like another dangerous job until the prize proves far more consequential than she expected. Suddenly, people with extraordinary resources have reason to silence her. To stay alive, Sancia must find allies and understand the technology that makes the object so valuable. Her unusual abilities offer an advantage, but they also connect her to questions she cannot easily answer about herself. As competing ambitions threaten the city, a thief accustomed to working alone is drawn into a struggle over who gets to control its future.
