Dear Rachel Maddow

Brynn finds a steady voice in television host Rachel Maddow when much of her own life feels uncertain. After a school assignment earns a reply, she begins composing further emails without sending them, using the imagined correspondence to think through her brother's death, a breakup with her girlfriend and trouble at home. School offers little comfort until a dispute over student representation gives her something to fight for. Brynn believes the students outside honors classes deserve a say in choosing a superintendent, too. Running for the representative's seat puts her against an old antagonist and her ex. Finding a public voice becomes an unexpected way to challenge the story others have written about her.
