Dawn of Change
2005
The story
Susan Sterling retreats to her family’s cabin in Kings Canyon National Park, needing distance from a marriage and a life she no longer knows how to inhabit. Meeting Shawn Weber begins as companionship in that period of uncertainty. Their friendship gradually becomes an emotional connection Susan cannot explain away, opening possibilities she had not allowed herself to consider. Pressure from her family pulls her toward reconciliation with her husband, making the choice before her more complicated than simply acknowledging attraction. Shawn represents a future that would require Susan to question expectations she has long accepted. As their bond deepens, Susan must decide whether she can claim a different life despite the cost, and whether the love she is beginning to recognize is something she is prepared to choose.
