Agent Luce Hansen sees a serial-murder investigation as a chance to advance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to the FBI. Taking the case means returning to Willow's Ridge, the town she left nineteen years earlier. It also means putting further strain on her relationship with Rowan. As Luce investigates the deaths of young women, the present case begins to echo the unsolved murder of her first girlfriend. A local ex-gay ministry and the history she hoped to escape come back into view. Professional ambition is no longer the only thing at stake when Luce's work forces her to confront a deeply personal past.
