A train journey through Norway ends abruptly when a blizzard derails the passengers' plans and leaves them sheltering in a remote mountain hotel. Retired police inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen would prefer to keep her distance. Living with paralysis after a shooting, she has little enthusiasm for becoming responsible for the strangers around her. Then a guest is killed, and the isolation that made the hotel a refuge becomes a danger. More deaths, frightened passengers and a heavily guarded mystery guest complicate Hanne's observations. Without the resources of an ordinary investigation or any immediate prospect of rescue, she must decide what the people trapped with her are concealing before the killer acts again.
