BETWEEN THE COVERS

The story

Liz Lighty has a plan for leaving Campbell, Indiana: attend Pennington College, join its orchestra and work toward becoming a doctor. Then the financial aid she is counting on falls through. Her school's prom scholarship offers another route, but winning means stepping into the spotlight in a town where she already feels too poor, too Black and too awkward to belong. Campaigning brings public scrutiny, competition and an unexpected bright spot in Mack, the new girl who understands feeling out of place. Mack is also running for prom queen. As their connection deepens, Liz has to weigh the future she has planned against what she wants for herself right now.
