The story
At thirty-five, Erica Skyberg has built an adult life around keeping a fundamental truth hidden. She is a trans woman, a teacher in South Dakota, and a divorcee who still feels tied to her former wife. Seventeen-year-old Abigail Hawkes, the only openly trans student at Erica's school, seems to possess the knowledge Erica desperately needs. Their unlikely friendship gives both of them someone who understands, but it also exposes the limits of asking another person to carry your fears. Moving between generations and different stages of transition, this novel examines loneliness, queer community and the work of becoming visible. Erica and Abigail's bond is a friendship, not a romance.
