A Family Matter
2025
The story
In 1982, young mother Dawn falls in love with Hazel, discovering a possibility her marriage has never offered. Choosing what to do with that love is complicated by her daughter and by a world whose laws give her husband power over their future. Forty years later, Heron receives a diagnosis he cannot bring himself to share with Maggie, the daughter around whom he has built his life. His silence protects more than medical news. Moving between these family histories, Claire Lynch's novel examines the distance between care and control, and the damage created when one version of the past is allowed to become the only story a child knows.
