Selene Rhodes has built her life around keeping other people at a distance. Able to take animal form, she also undergoes a monthly transformation that strips away her human conscience. A strict routine and solitude seem the safest way to protect everyone around her. Forensic pathologist Eve Thomas has her own reasons to avoid romance after a painful betrayal. Their paths cross when Selene intervenes in an attack on Eve in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The attraction neither woman expected becomes harder to ignore as a murderer stalks the city. With Eve in danger and Selene frightened of her own nature, trusting each other could be as consequential as confronting the threat outside.
