White is for Witching
2009
The story
The Silver family's Dover house has sheltered generations of women, and its hold on them does not seem to end with death. Miranda lives there with her twin brother, Eliot, while their father runs the building as a bed-and-breakfast. After their mother's sudden death abroad, Miranda's grief becomes entangled with troubling voices, physical illness and an increasingly oppressive sense of inheritance. Bringing someone new into the house exposes more than family secrets: the hostility of the surrounding town finds an unsettling expression inside its walls. This gothic novel moves through competing perspectives on a disappearance, asking what a home preserves, whom it excludes and how deeply the past can inhabit the present.
