Avery Anderson expects her move from Washington, DC, to Georgia to ruin her final year of high school. Living with her terminally ill grandmother also puts her in the middle of a family rift nobody will explain. Away from the tension at home, Avery grows close to her neighbor Simone and to Jade, whose mother's murder remains unsolved. Her friendship with Simone develops into romance, giving her a reason to imagine belonging in Bardell. Yet the town's racism and her family's guarded history make that sense of possibility precarious. With her grandmother running out of time, Avery must weigh the need for answers against the fragile connections she is beginning to build.
