The Long Way Home
2010
The story
Raine St. James built a life in Chicago after being forced from her family home as a teenager. Returning to Darlington was never part of the plan. A series of setbacks leaves her with few choices, and a teaching position brings her back to the town she has publicly condemned. Beth Devoroux has found a measure of comfort in that same community, with a career and relationship that depend on keeping parts of her life private. Raine’s outspoken presence challenges the compromises Beth has learned to accept. Their attraction exposes sharply different understandings of home, safety, and belonging. Getting closer means confronting what each woman has sacrificed to survive, and whether a place associated with old pain can hold the possibility of something new.
