Sorrowland

Pregnant and desperate to leave the religious community that raised her, Vern escapes into the woods. There she gives birth to twins and tries to create a life beyond the compound’s reach. Isolation does not keep its influence away. Pursued by people unwilling to release her, Vern begins experiencing extraordinary and frightening changes in her body. Protecting her children requires more than hiding, and understanding what is happening means confronting the world outside the forest. The search leads toward the secrets of her former community and the American history that made it possible. This gothic story of survival follows a mother whose transformation exposes violence that cannot be contained within one household or institution.
