Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
1985
The story
Jeanette has been raised to believe that her future is already settled. Adopted into an evangelical household in northern England, she is expected to become a missionary and help save other people's souls. Her mother's certainty organizes the world into simple categories, but Jeanette's feelings refuse to fit them. Falling in love with a girl brings her into conflict with the family and religious community that have shaped her understanding of herself. As she questions their authority, stories and imagination offer ways to think beyond the choices she has been given. Her search for independence becomes a struggle to preserve love and a sense of self without accepting the life prescribed for her.
