On a Woman's Madness
1982
The story
After nine days of marriage, Noenka leaves a violent husband and tries to claim a different future in Paramaribo. He refuses to grant her a divorce, but remaining legally tied to him does not end her search for independence. New work, friendships, and relationships with women offer possibilities that conflict with the expectations surrounding her. Set in Suriname, the novel follows a Black woman's struggle to define freedom in a society shaped by colonial history, family obligations, and gendered power. Noenka's efforts to choose her own life resist a tidy account of escape, asking what autonomy can mean when other people continue to claim authority over her.
