Maria Griffiths works in a New York used bookstore and tries to maintain a punk identity that sits uneasily alongside the routines of her life. Her relationship with Steph is failing, and the habits that keep her going do little to help her understand what she wants. After their breakup, Maria takes Steph's car and heads west, eventually reaching a small Nevada town. There she meets James, whose uncertainty reminds her of her own earlier experiences as a trans woman. Maria begins to imagine that she can offer the guidance she once needed. This road novel examines the risks of treating another person's life as a chance to repair your own.
