Sorcha wants a child, but the future she imagines is tangled in a relationship that has become abusive. At thirty-one, pregnant and living in Cape Breton, she reaches a point where remaining with Chris can no longer be treated as an acceptable version of love. Leaving brings her toward estranged family and an uncertain refuge with Agnes, a retired midwife living in Scotland. The distance offers possibilities, but it does not remove the emotional history Sorcha carries. This literary novel follows a queer woman seeking safety and a different relationship to her own desires, with pregnancy, family estrangement and the work of rebuilding trust shaping a story that does not promise an uncomplicated romantic resolution.
