Beatrice Everson marries the Earl of Sinclair to solve her family’s financial problems, but the marriage offers little of the happiness she expected. She turns instead toward the charming George Smith, unaware of the other life George leads as Lady Georgina, host of a bluestocking salon. Attraction brings their secrets into contact with the rigid expectations of London society. When Beatrice discovers she is pregnant, she begins imagining divorce and a different marriage.
