Godmother Night

1996

BETWEEN THE COVERS

The story

Laurie and Jaqe build a life together, but their family’s relationship with death is far from ordinary. Mother Night enters their world as a presence who can be encountered, spoken to and perhaps bargained with, bringing myth into the intimate territory of love and parenthood. Their daughter Kate grows up within that altered understanding of what a life can contain. The family’s bonds are tested by possibilities that reach beyond the familiar limits of the everyday. Through the women’s relationships and the figure of Mother Night, this fantasy considers how people hold on to one another when change is unavoidable and love cannot guarantee protection from loss.
