The story
In the summer of 1996, Hannah and Sam leave New York for San Francisco, hoping to live openly as girlfriends beyond the reach of Hannah's Orthodox Jewish family. Freedom arrives with rent to pay, and stripping at the Chez Paree becomes part of making their new life possible. Hannah's encounter with Chris, an older butch lesbian, opens another arrangement and another set of questions about dependence, desire and belonging. As Sam builds connections of her own, the future the girlfriends imagined starts pulling in different directions. This coming-of-age novel follows a young queer woman trying to distinguish the home she fled toward from the person she is becoming.
