The story
Twelve interconnected lives open different views of Britain, its histories and the people whose experiences are too often pushed to the margins. Amma, a Black lesbian playwright, has reached a new stage of public recognition; her longtime friend Shirley has spent years teaching, while Shirley's former student Carole moves through the very different world of investment banking. Their stories intersect with those of mothers, daughters, friends and strangers across generations. Moving between backgrounds, identities and social positions, the novel traces how private choices are shaped by inherited expectations and changing circumstances. Its many voices resist a single account of womanhood or belonging, finding connections without pretending that difference has disappeared.
