Displacement
2020
The story
While visiting San Francisco, Kiku is suddenly transported into the past, arriving at a Japanese American incarceration camp during the Second World War. Her grandmother Ernestina was imprisoned there, but the history Kiku encounters is no longer distant family information. Repeated displacements eventually leave her living among the people whose civil rights were stripped away, witnessing both the everyday hardships and the communities they built in response. This graphic novel uses time travel to connect inherited memory with direct experience. As Kiku learns what school lessons have left out, she must confront how histories of displacement endure across generations and how acts of care and resistance survive alongside them.
