Cassandra At the Wedding
1962
The story
Cassandra Edwards leaves Berkeley for her family's ranch in the Sierra foothills, ostensibly to attend her identical twin Judith's wedding. Privately, she intends to prevent it. Brilliant, unhappy and deeply attached to the idea that the sisters belong together, Cassandra sees Judith's marriage as a change she cannot easily bear. Returning home brings her into contact with her father's drinking, memories of her dead mother and the familiar patterns of family life. Over the course of the visit, her attempts to control events expose the vulnerability beneath her sharp intelligence. This tragicomic novel follows a gay woman's struggle to accept a future that will not preserve the closeness she once took for granted.
