The story
Caroline Bertram has finished art school with an ambition to write and a fierce belief in the importance of her own creative life. Turning that belief into an adult existence proves less straightforward. She struggles with drinking, self-doubt and the uncomfortable relationship between artistic worth and commercial recognition. Being queer is one part of a life in which personal identity, friendships and creative aspirations refuse to stay neatly separated. As Caroline confronts the gap between the person she imagines herself to be and the person other people encounter, the pursuit of fulfilment becomes both a practical problem and an emotional one. Making art does not exempt her from learning how to live.
