An Accident of Stars

Saffron Coulter steps through an opening in reality and finds herself in Kena, a magical country approaching civil war. Getting home is no longer a problem she can solve alone. Her path becomes bound to Zech, an acolyte serving a powerful exile; Viya, a ruler's runaway consort; and Gwen, a traveller from Earth who helped bring that ruler to power. Pursuit drives them toward a neighbouring matriarchy and into alliances shaped by histories Saffron is only beginning to understand. Blood, magic and friendship make retreat increasingly complicated. To survive an unfamiliar world, she must decide what responsibility comes with the bonds she forms there, even before she knows whether she can leave.
