Teaching self-defence to a group of women in Atlanta forces her to confront consequences that cannot be managed with technique alone. A trip to Seattle offers a change of scene, a meeting with her mother and an apparently straightforward investigation into fraud at one of her properties. The building is being used for a film production, where sabotage and substantial money complicate the job. Moving between the lessons in Atlanta and the dangers in Seattle, Aud encounters limits to the independence on which she has relied and the possibility of allowing other people closer.
