The Hild Sequence · Book 1
The story
In seventh-century Britain, kingdoms compete, religious allegiances shift and power depends on recognizing danger before a rival does. Hild, the young niece of Edwin of Northumbria, possesses an unusual ability to observe patterns in the world around her. Her attentiveness earns her a place beside the king as a seer, making her useful to his ambitions and vulnerable to his failures. Protecting her family and those who depend on her requires constant interpretation of people, politics and the natural world. This historical novel imagines the early life of the woman who would become Hilda of Whitby, following a gifted girl whose apparent certainty conceals the high stakes of being wrong.
