Nora Gallagher and Gray Ferris are both accomplished Philadelphia real estate agents. Beyond their work, Nora sees little reason to think they have anything in common. She has spent years keeping her personal life contained, convinced that relying on other people brings disappointment. Gray seems to move through the world with precisely the openness Nora avoids: sociable, expressive, and determined to make room for happiness. That confidence does not mean her own life has been easy. As the women get to know each other, first impressions begin to give way to a more complicated understanding.
