Shesheshen has never understood why humans are so alarmed by her. A shapeshifting monster with practical needs and unusual habits, she would rather be left alone than hunted. When an attack leaves her injured, a woman named Homily offers unexpected care. Shesheshen begins imagining a future with her rescuer, although her ideas about love and reproduction are considerably less gentle than Homily might expect. Then she discovers that Homily’s family is searching for a monster they blame for a curse: Shesheshen herself. Concealing her identity becomes harder as affection deepens. To have any chance of staying together, she will need to reconsider what loving another person actually requires.
