Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest To Track Down the Last Remaining Lesbian Bars in America
2023
The story
Krista Burton sets out to visit the lesbian bars still operating across the United States, asking what their survival means after decades of closures. The trip takes her into different cities, crowds and local traditions, from drag performances to karaoke and less easily categorized competitions. Each stop becomes an opportunity to consider who finds welcome in these spaces and how that welcome has changed. Burton also brings her own history into the journey, including coming out within a Mormon family and navigating queer community with her husband, a trans man. This nonfiction travelogue explores the social work done by places built for pleasure, considering what is lost when a bar closes and what remains possible when people keep gathering.
