Hijab Butch Blues

The story
At fourteen, Lamya H recognizes that her feelings for a female teacher do not fit the life expected of her. Rather than abandon the Quran, she returns to its stories with questions about difference, belonging, and the possibility of being understood. This memoir follows her from childhood through immigration and into adult queer life, placing religious interpretation alongside experiences of family, community, and love. Familiar figures from Islamic tradition become companions in making sense of a life that others might treat as contradictory. Lamya’s account explores what it means to remain connected to faith while finding language for desire and building a place in the world on her own terms.
