In the Dream House

Carmen Maria Machado revisits a relationship with another woman that became a source of psychological abuse, examining both what happened and the difficulty of finding language for it. Rather than presenting memory as a single uninterrupted account, she approaches the experience through shifting literary forms and familiar cultural narratives. Moments of desire, fear and uncertainty sit alongside questions about what queer communities and public archives recognise as abuse. The house of the title becomes a way to consider how an intimate space can change its meaning without becoming easy to leave. This memoir explores the distance between living through harm and being able to describe it, while making room for experiences too often excluded from conventional accounts of domestic violence.
