The story
In this collection of autobiographical stories, Ivan Coyote looks at queer life through the encounters and family connections that make up an ordinary day. Memories of growing up in northern Canada sit alongside experiences of being read, misread and questioned by strangers. The stories attend to the vulnerability of young queer people, the persistence of homophobia and the unexpected recognition that can pass between people who seem to have little in common. Rather than following a single romance or a continuous plot, the collection builds a portrait through brief episodes and remembered conversations. Coyote returns to the difficult, sometimes funny work of finding a place within family and community while refusing the narrow definitions other people impose.
