The story
Savannah Espinoza expected to leave her small New Mexico hometown after graduation. Her father's Huntington's diagnosis changes those plans, leaving Vanni at home with her mother, helping to care for him and struggling to imagine what comes next. A job performing as a mermaid at a water park fills her days, while casual relationships offer distractions without demanding much vulnerability. Then she meets Leigh, whose impatience with small-town life feels familiar even as their connection unsettles everything else. Friendship becomes something more, forcing Vanni to confront desires and questions she has kept at a distance. Amid family responsibilities and an uncertain future, she must work out what it means to let someone know her.
