I’m a Wild Seed: My Graphic Memoir on Queerness and Decolonizing the World
2021
The story
Sharon Lee De La Cruz uses autobiographical comics to examine how race, gender, and inherited expectations shaped her understanding of queerness. Personal memories sit beside reflections on history and identity as she considers why recognizing herself took time. Growing up, coming out, and finding queer community become parts of a larger question about whose definitions of freedom she has been taught to accept. The graphic memoir connects intimate experiences with the structures around them, including patriarchy and colonialism, without treating self-discovery as separate from everyday life. Its focus is the work of unlearning assumptions and making room for a self that those assumptions could never fully describe.
