Honor Girl: A Graphic Memoir
2015
The story
Fifteen-year-old Maggie arrives at summer camp carrying the expectations of a familiar Southern world. Then her feelings for Erin, an older female counselor, turn an ordinary season of camp activities into a much more confusing experience. Maggie is beginning to recognize a desire she has little language for, in an environment where noticing the wrong thing can feel dangerously conspicuous. This graphic memoir looks back on that summer through moments of friendship, observation, embarrassment, and discovery. Rather than treating coming out as a single decisive event, it follows the uneven process of understanding oneself while still living inside other people’s assumptions. Camp becomes the setting for an emotional awakening Maggie cannot simply leave behind.
