Hurricane Season
2019
The story
Fig is used to watching the weather for reasons other children might not understand. Her father’s moods and creative life seem bound to the storms around them, and she worries about what hurricane season could bring. Trying to understand him draws her toward art, even as she struggles with the responsibility she feels for his well-being. New friendships and a first crush on another girl add questions she cannot solve by keeping everything under control. Nicole Melleby’s middle-grade novel follows a child learning to distinguish love from the belief that she must manage a parent’s illness alone, while making room for her own hopes and discoveries.
