Hurricane Child
2018
The story
Caroline Murphy has always been told that being born during a hurricane brings bad luck. At twelve, she has plenty of reasons to believe it: school is lonely, unsettling visions follow her, and her mother has disappeared. Then Kalinda arrives from Barbados and becomes the friend Caroline has been longing for. Caroline’s feelings soon grow more complicated than friendship, making the possibility of being understood both thrilling and frightening. Together, the girls begin searching for answers about Caroline’s mother. Set in the U.S. Virgin Islands, this story follows a child trying to make sense of abandonment, love and the things other people refuse to see, while another storm gathers around her.
