The story
Penelope O’Grady and Cara Wall first fell in love as girls at a Dublin convent school. Thirteen years later, their difficult, enduring relationship ends abruptly when Cara dies in a car crash. Pen is left grieving inside a life that does not publicly acknowledge who she has lost. Still teaching at her old school and living with Cara’s father, who believes they were friends, she cannot easily claim the place of a bereaved partner. Over the course of a week, memories of tenderness, anger, desire, and betrayal interrupt the practical business of carrying on. Pen must reckon with the complicated woman she loved while beginning to imagine a future she never expected to face alone.
