The story
For most of Margot’s life, family has meant only her mother—and a relationship defined by unanswered questions. An old photograph offers a way into the history her mother refuses to discuss, leading Margot to the town of Phalene and a grandmother she has never known. Instead of a reassuring explanation, she finds a place where the past seems dangerously present. A disturbing discovery near the family farm turns her search for belonging into something far more frightening. Margot must decide which stories to trust as the mysteries around her relatives deepen. This young adult horror novel follows a lesbian protagonist confronting inheritance, secrecy and the unsettling possibility that finding her roots could threaten her future.
