Amatka

Vanja travels from Essre to the cold colony of Amatka on a routine information-gathering assignment. The visit is supposed to be temporary, but the community’s peculiar habits and the closeness she develops with her housemate, Nina, give her reasons to remain. Beneath the strict routines lies an unease that cannot be explained away by unfamiliar customs. Language, objects and the rules governing daily life seem connected in disturbing ways. When Vanja encounters signs of a threat and an official effort to conceal it, curiosity becomes dangerous. Her search for an explanation puts her relationship and her place in the community at risk, forcing her to weigh the comfort of belonging against the need to understand.
